EMBARK Terms
Effective November 2, 2026.
These terms are the agreement between you and Aryeh Zaghi ("we") for using EMBARK. By creating an account you agree to them and to the Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use EMBARK. Questions: embarkteam.app@gmail.com.
1. What EMBARK does
EMBARK helps you do what you said you'd do. You add tasks, the things you want done today. Your phone's data checks a task where it can (like steps or sleep), or you tick it off yourself. On Plus and Pro, a task can lock your apps: if a task with "Locks my apps" on isn't done by midnight, the apps you picked lock the next day. You get emergency passes each month: you choose how many, from 1 to 5 (3 until you choose).
2. Your choices, your consequences
- You choose your tasks, which of them lock your apps, the apps that lock, your daily limits and your protected time. EMBARK carries out what you chose.
- How locks work: on Plus and Pro, a task with "Locks my apps" on that isn't done by midnight locks the apps you picked the next day, from your wake-up time (set in your profile) until midnight. One lock day, however many tasks weren't done, unless you chose longer locks (below). A task marked "No lock" never locks, and nothing happens if you skip it. Without a plan, nothing locks.
- Longer locks (optional, adults only): before a task starts, you can choose a lock of 2 or 3 days for missing it instead of 1, and you can set a rule that missing the same task twice in a row within a week locks for 2 or 3 days. You choose these, after a one-time yes, and ONYX never makes them stricter on its own. Once a task's day starts, its stakes can go up but not down. However much is missed, no app is ever locked more than 3 days in a row from missed tasks: if locks overlap, they run together; they don't add up. An emergency pass ends the whole lock, the days still to come included. Protected time, passes and a crisis pause apply as always, and calls, texts, emergency calls, maps and Settings are never locked.
- Locking starts only after your one-time yes, and you can turn it off in the app (Locks > When a task isn't done). With it off, your tasks stay plain tasks. Turning it off doesn't stop a lock or a locking task whose day has already started. The add-a-task sheet shows whether each task locks, before you save it, and EMBARK never switches that on or off for you.
- Once a locking task's day starts, it can't be deleted, moved or switched off, except swapped, the same day, for an equal or harder task with ONYX's OK. The app decides what counts as equal or harder (the same day, the same time or earlier, the same or a bigger goal, checked the same way or by your phone); ONYX can say no, never yes to less. Each swap is shown on the task. If ONYX says no, your task stays as it was. Changes that only make it harder are still allowed. The ways out are finishing it, an emergency pass, or the lock.
- A task is your own goal, not a contract with EMBARK. EMBARK doesn't check tasks you tick yourself; a wrong tick is on you. No money is ever owed or paid to unlock.
- ONYX checks in (optional, Plus and Pro): you can turn it on for a locking task you tick yourself. ONYX asks one or two questions before the tick and says what it thinks; you still decide if it's done, and ONYX never stops or undoes a tick. It's never offered for food, weight, body or medical tasks.
- A promise you made before this change finishes as made, with its lock if it's missed.
- Nothing locks, is due or counts as not done during protected time you set. A day that's fully protected never counts against you.
- Never locked: calls, texts, emergency calls, maps, medical and health-device apps (for example a glucose monitor or insulin app), authenticator apps and safety apps. Locks also never block your phone's Settings or uninstalling apps. On iPhone, Apple guarantees only phone calls; you choose which other apps lock, so leave out anything you need.
- Your choice, your risk: you choose to lock apps on your own phone, and you accept that a lock you chose can keep you out of those apps for the day, and can start late or fire when it shouldn't. Don't lock an app you need for your health, safety, work or money.
- You can always turn app locking off in your phone's settings; that lock then ends and the day counts as unchecked. If a task your phone checks can't be checked because access is off or EMBARK was stopped, it counts as not done, and a task that locks your apps locks them the next day. If something went wrong, you can explain it to ONYX from the lock screen.
- Getting around a lock (Android): getting around a lock, such as using locked apps another way or turning off Usage Access or app locking while a lock is on, uses one emergency pass, at most once a day. If none are left that month, the same apps lock again the next day, from wake-up to midnight. This never applies during protected time, a pass or a crisis pause, never for the first 15 minutes EMBARK can't see your apps, and never when your phone turned access off itself (a restart, an update or Advanced Protection). It applies only after you tap OK on this rule in the app. If EMBARK couldn't see your apps and you didn't turn anything off, tap "I didn't turn it off": the first time each month you get it back at once; after that, ONYX decides. Uninstalling EMBARK is always allowed.
- Phone data can be late or wrong. A task your phone checks says "checked by your phone"; a task you tick yourself is your word. If a result looks wrong, report it from the lock details. We try to be fair (late data can still count a task as done), but we don't guarantee that every reading is correct.
3. ONYX is an AI coach
- ONYX's replies are written by AI. They can be wrong, and they are coaching, not professional advice.
- ONYX is an AI coach, not a therapist or medical provider. In a crisis, call or text 988.
- ONYX isn't a doctor, therapist, lawyer, financial adviser or crisis service. Don't rely on it for medical, mental-health, legal or financial decisions.
- EMBARK is not a medical device. It doesn't diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Talk to a doctor or another licensed professional about your health. How ONYX handles a crisis: https://joinembark.app/safety.
- If you're in danger or thinking about hurting yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line now (in the US, call or text 988). ONYX will point you to help and stop pushing, but it can't help in an emergency.
- Move to unlock (Pro): if you choose to open apps with exercise, you do it at your own risk. EMBARK counts reps; it isn't medical or fitness advice and doesn't say an exercise is right for you. Stop if anything hurts, and tap I'm hurt: exercise locks turn off for the rest of that day, with no proof, no pass and no miss. Every gate always has a second way out that you pick, and every Move to unlock lock ends by the end of its day, whatever happens.
- Don't add a task that could hurt you (for example, extreme fasting, no sleep, or training through an injury), and don't set it to lock your apps. ONYX won't suggest tasks like that on purpose; you're responsible for the ones you add.
4. Your account
- You must be at least 18. EMBARK checks your birthday at sign-up and, where your phone supports it, the age range your app store already knows. An account made by someone under 18 is paused and deleted.
- Keep your sign-in safe. You're responsible for what happens on your account.
- One account per person. Don't use another person's account or make accounts to get around a lock.
- We record which version of these terms and the Privacy Policy you agreed to, and when.
5. Friends, challenges and what you share
- Friends see your rank, score, streak and whether your tasks were done or not, never what they were, your step or sleep numbers, or your chat. You choose who can find you (at first, only people you share your code with) and whether you appear on the world leaderboard.
- Be decent. Don't harass, threaten, impersonate, spam, or share anything illegal, sexual or hateful through usernames, challenges or reports. Never send or share to ONYX anything unlawful, including other people's intimate images.
- In a challenge, the phone or ONYX checks each day. ONYX's call is final for the leaderboard only. Challenges never lock apps, use passes or involve money. Challenges can't be about food, weight, your body, medicine or anything dangerous.
- You can block and report anyone. We may remove content, limit features or close accounts that break these rules.
6. Subscriptions and trials
- EMBARK is one paid subscription, Pro, billed yearly or monthly, with what it includes listed on the plans page before you buy. There is no free plan: without Pro, the app shows the plans page, and crisis help, Settings, Help, your privacy controls, your data export and deleting your account stay open. A lock that's already running when a plan ends finishes as made, and its emergency passes still work. If you bought Plus before, it keeps working as bought until it ends. Emergency passes are never sold: every plan has the same 1 to 5 a month, and more never costs money.
- Prices are shown in the app and in Google Play or the App Store before you buy. The billed price is the one shown largest.
- ONYX messages: Plus includes 60 messages to ONYX a month (at most 20 a day) and Pro 160 a month (at most 60 a day). The app shows how many you have left. Messages ONYX sends you first, its replies to your nightly check-in, its weekly review, its questions when it checks in on a task and its answer to a swap don't count, and a message in a crisis always gets an answer and never counts, on every plan. On Pro, a minute of ONYX Live uses about 3 messages; the app says so before each call.
- When a plan ends: a plan ends when the paid period ends (or at a refund), not when you cancel. If your plan ends, a lock that's already on finishes its time; paid lock rules stop the next day, and your locking tasks become plain tasks from the next day. Apps over your new plan's limit stay on your list but don't lock. A promise made on a paid plan before this change runs to its deadline exactly as made. Your memory, notebooks and plans stay saved.
- Pro free trial: Pro may come with a 7-day free trial, one per Google account, for people who haven't had Pro. During the trial you get 60 messages to ONYX in total (not Pro's 160 a month), counted the same way. When the 7 days end, it turns into Pro at the price you picked, $99.99 a year or $17.99 a month (or the price Google Play showed you), and renews every year or every month, unless you cancel in Google Play before the trial ends. If you cancel, Pro runs until the trial ends, and then the plan-ends rule above applies. The trial isn't available while you have an active Plus plan.
- Reminders: we notify you 3 days before a free trial turns into a paid subscription (earlier if your protected time covers that moment, and always at least a day before the charge), and notify you about 20 days before a yearly plan renews, and email you too once you've confirmed an email address.
- Subscriptions renew automatically, at the price and for the period shown when you bought, until you cancel. Your Google Play or App Store account is charged at the start of each period. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.
- How to cancel: Cancel any time in Google Play (Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions), on iPhone (Settings > your name > Subscriptions), or in EMBARK at Settings > Membership > Manage. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
- Payments and refunds are handled by Google Play or Apple under their rules.
7. What you may not do
Don't break the law with EMBARK, try to break into it or other people's accounts, copy or resell it, overload it, or use it to build a competing service. Don't use it to monitor or control someone else's phone: app locking is only for your own.
8. Our part
- We work to keep EMBARK running and your data safe, but it's provided "as is". We don't promise it will always be available, error-free, or that it will make you reach your goals.
- To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for anything that follows from a lock, a missed notification or a wrong reading. Our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
- Nothing in these terms limits rights you have by law that can't be limited.
9. Ending
You can delete your account any time in Settings, or at https://joinembark.app/delete-account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, telling you why where we can. Sections 3, 8 and 10 still apply after that.
10. The law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, USA. If there's a problem, write to embarkteam.app@gmail.com first; most things are solved that way.
11. Changes
If we change these terms, we'll update the date at the top and tell you in the app before the change matters to you. If you keep using EMBARK after that, the new terms apply.
