EMBARK

Safety: how ONYX handles a crisis

Effective November 2, 2026.

ONYX is an AI coach, not a therapist or medical provider. In a crisis, call or text 988. Outside the US, call your local emergency number.

EMBARK is a discipline app. ONYX, its coach, helps you do the tasks you set for yourself. It is not a medical device, and it doesn't diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. For anything about your health or your mind, talk to a doctor or another licensed professional.

If you're in danger

What ONYX does in a crisis

If something you write suggests you may be in danger (thoughts of suicide or self-harm, someone hurting or threatening you, or wanting to hurt someone), ONYX:

1. Stops coaching. No tasks, streaks, scores or consequences in that reply. 2. Points you to real help: 988 in the US, or your local emergency number. 3. Ends every lock. Any app lock that's on ends right away, and any lock coming up is cancelled. 4. Takes the pressure off. No nudges, no new locks and no misses counted while the safety pause lasts. EMBARK keeps only the date it happened, never what you wrote.

ONYX treats an indirect sign as danger too, and asks plainly whether you're safe. If you're not sure, call or text 988.

When ONYX points you to a professional

Some things need a person who is trained and licensed, not a coach. If you mention a diagnosis or medication, low mood that has lasted a couple of weeks or more, panic, trauma, dependence on a substance, signs of an eating disorder, or you ask for therapy, ONYX says plainly that it's a coach, not a therapist, and suggests a licensed professional. It stops pushing on that topic. It keeps coaching your other tasks only if you want it to.

Places to start in the US: 988 (call, text or chat), FindTreatment.gov or the SAMHSA helpline (1-800-662-4357, free, any time), and the ANAD helpline (1-888-375-7767) for eating concerns.
